In a recent podcast episode of “Productivity like a Pro,” Tom (Dr. Thomas Roedl) from the Paperless Movement® sat down with Sam Claassen, the Head of Growth at Reflect, to discuss the latest advancements and features of the Reflect app. Here’s a deep dive into their conversation about how Reflect is transforming note-taking with AI and other innovative features.

Introduction to Reflect

Sam Classon provided a brief introduction to Reflect, highlighting its minimalist approach to note-taking designed to help users think better. Reflect distinguishes itself from other tools by focusing on simplicity and performance, drawing a comparison to Apple Notes for its speed and ease of use. However, Reflect stands out with its powerful AI integration and unique backlinking model, which mirrors the brain’s way of associating thoughts and ideas.

Leveraging AI for Voice Transcription

One of the standout features discussed was Reflect’s voice recording and transcription capability, powered by OpenAI’s Whisper. Sam emphasized how transformative this feature has been for his own note-taking, making it a non-negotiable tool. Unlike traditional voice assistants like Siri, Whisper offers exceptional accuracy, which is crucial for effective transcription and subsequent note organization.

Reflect also uses GPT-4 for its AI assistant, which can format transcriptions, add backlinks, and even draft proposals or article outlines based on user prompts. This integration makes capturing and organizing thoughts effortless, particularly for busy professionals who need to jot down ideas on the go.

AI Chat and Advanced Search

Reflect’s AI chat feature allows users to interact with their notes using AI, a functionality integrated into its advanced search feature. This ensures that the AI only pulls information from filtered notes, maintaining context and relevance. This approach also addresses privacy concerns, as only the data used by the AI assistant is shared with OpenAI, keeping the rest of the user’s data secure.

Other Reflect Features

Despite the focus on AI, Reflect offers a robust set of features for effective Personal Knowledge Management. These include:

  • Backlinking: Reflect uses a backlinking model over a traditional folder system, allowing notes to be connected in a way that mimics the brain’s associative thinking.
  • Task Management: Reflect has introduced a task management feature, which includes simple checkboxes and tasks that appear in a dedicated tasks tab. Tasks are organized by their due dates, integrated into the daily notes, and can be filtered for easy management.
  • Rich Content Integration: Users can embed YouTube videos, attach files, and soon will be able to search within attached PDFs thanks to upcoming OCR support.
  • Suggested Backlinks and Similar Notes: Reflect now suggests backlinks and shows similar notes based on the context, further enhancing the note-taking experience.

Future Developments

Sam hinted at exciting future updates, including the addition of task management to the mobile app and enhanced file attachment features. Reflect is also exploring locally hosted AI to provide even greater privacy and functionality.
